Ambrosia maple (Acer spp.) is not a distinct species of maple but rather a fungal discoloration caused by wood-boring ambrosia beetles! When beetles burrow into the tree, the ambrosia fungus is spread and subsequently discolors the wood around the boring paths.  The stained wood will appear grayish in color and is typically an oblong shape running with the grain.  The discolored pattern ranges in intensity depending on the infestation.
