Birdseye Maple #1
Birdseye maple (Acer spp.) is not a distinct species of maple but rather a grain anomaly. Although rare exceptions exist, birdseye maple is almost exclusively harvested from hard maple (Acer saccharum). Although it has not been scientifically proven, researchers believe the tiny knots are caused by unfavorable growing conditions. In an attempt to access more sunlight, buds begin to sprout on the trunk but without the necessary nutrients to support the new growth they are absorbed back into the tree resulting in “birdseyes”. This rare figuring is coveted by many woodworkers and artists.
