NATIONAL FOREST/PARK SERIES
In 2022, we will be releasing a limited series of earrings each month inspired by America's national parks and forests. Each collection is influenced by the unique landscapes and diverse geology and ecology found in these natural spaces.
In January, we decided to highlight the White Mountain National Forest located in northern New Hampshire. We chose to use spalted sugar maple, a common species throughout New England, in this design because of its variable pattern and coloring. The cool, dark color palette was developed using the above photo taken from Mount Lincoln and celebrates the regions expansive spruce-fir forests and granite peaks.
In February, we highlighted Ouachita National Forest and Osage Orange (Maclura pomifera). Located in western Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma, this forest features rolling hills dominated by pine, oak, and hickory. Osage orange, a small deciduous tree native to the region, is not commercially harvested but is commonly planted to prevent soil erosion or act as a windbreak. This species bright yellow heartwood was the foundation for the warm, sunset inspired color palette.
March: This month’s design centers around the world renowned geologic formations and colors found in Arches National Park located in Moab, Utah. Although this desert landscape may seem bare of vegetation, you can find many tree and shrub species scattered across the park — including box elder (Acer negundo), March’s species of focus. For this design, I sawed mini arches out of boxelder and then spent several days layering resin in an attempt to capture the eroded sandstone and desert varnish characteristics of the region.
